Systems over outcomes.

Even if the chip shot went in the hole, it doesn’t mean you hit the ball properly. It might simply have been a positive variance. Next time, it could easily bounce the other way. In order to improve our performance, we need to model our preparation, our effort and our form against a standard, not base it on the outcome. Because outcomes aren’t always guaranteed by our work.

A big reason why the education system is at such a loss in modern times is that we’ve shifted our focus to outcomes over systems.

Memorizing old sample exams and sharing Coursehero logins became the norm for getting through undergraduate studies.

Cutting corners just to reach that 3.2 for a call back from Deloitte.

The outcome became the letter on the transcript, not the material discussed in between semesters.

Life is too complex and nuanced for outcome based living.

Good work is the result of effective systems and standards in place.

I picked up reading Seth Godin’s book — Linchpin over the weekend.. and I have to admit its nothing less than incredible.
