Booker T. Washington [in his autobiography] describes a time he visited the nation’s capital.

He noticed his peers would spend half a week’s salary for a buggy on Sunday to ride up and down Pennsylvania Avenue.

In Booker’s words, “..in order that they might try to convince the world that they were worth thousands.”

The “highlight reel” lifestyle is as old as history itself — we’ve just moved from buggys to overpriced cars and champagne.
