“There are people who went to sleep all over the world last night, poor and rich and white and black, but they will never wake again. Sister, those who expected to rise did not, their beds became their cooling boards, and their blankets became their winding sheets. And those dead folks would give anything, anything at all for just five minutes of this... So you watch yourself about complaining, Sister. What you're supposed to do when you don't like a thing is change it. If you can't change it, change the way you think about it. Don't complain.

Maya Angelou

I’m the product of two parents that did not take no for an answer.

Two parents that came from not much and built a foundation for the two sons they brought into this world.

A Turkish immigrant father and a black mother that worked tirelessly to make sure they left the world better than they found it.

And the world my parents left is a reason to never complain about my current state of living.

To never be ungrateful for what’s been given and to never take it for granted.

Because what’s given to you is not be the same for millions of others.

So while you bask in your privilege and as you read this passage through the device made by dirty hands…

Say thanks.
